Course Description

Loss of function in mitochondria, organelles chiefly responsible for cellular energy production, can result in symptoms that range from excessive fatigue to other manifestations of chronic disease. This module will review overall mitochondrial dysfunction and restoration, with specific focus on treatments for common age-related diseases including dementia, cardiovascular disease, fatigue syndromes, and other genetic conditions.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize disease processes that are associated with poor thyroid transport and mitochondrial dysfunction

Jill Carnahan,

Dr. Carnahan completed her residency at the University of Illinois Program in Family Medicine at Methodist Medical Center. In 2006 she was voted by faculty to receive the Resident Teacher of the Year award and elected to Central Illinois 40 Leaders Under 40. She received her medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and her Bachelor of Science degree in Bio-Engineering at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She is dually board-certified in Family Medicine (ABFM) and Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM).

Dr. Jill was also part of the first 100+ health-care practitioners to be certified in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFMCP). In 2008, Dr. Carnahan’s vision for health and healing resulted in the creation of Methodist Center for Integrative Medicine in Peoria, IL where she served as the Medical Director for 2 years. In 2010, she founded Flatiron Functional Medicine in Boulder, Colorado where she partnered in functional medicine with medical partner, Dr. Robert Rountree. She recently opened a brand new medical clinic with a broad range of services in Louisville, Colorado.

Dr. Jill is also 15-year survivor of breast cancer and Crohn’s disease and passionate about teaching patients how to “live well” and thrive in the midst of complex and chronic illness. She is also committed to teaching other physicians how to address underlying cause of illness rather than just treating symptoms through the principles of functional medicine. She is a prolific writer, speaker, and loves to infuse others with her passion for health and healing!

Andrew Heyman, MD, MHSA

MD, MHSA

Andrew Heyman, MD, MHSA is an internationally recognized expert in Integrative Medicine. He is currently the Program Director of Integrative and Metabolic Medicine at The George Washington University. Prior to assuming this role, he spent 16 years at the University of Michigan, serving to build one of the largest and most successful academic-based Integrative Medicine programs in the United States.

In 1990, he received formal training in Five-element Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine, during which time he developed an interest in increasing access of natural therapies to underserved populations while partnering with the University of Pennsylvania. He continued this work with Jim Gordon, MD at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington DC exploring the intersection between public health, at risk groups, and alternative therapies.

Dr. Heyman eventually went on to receive a Masters in Health Services Administration at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and upon graduation, became the administrator for the University of Michigan Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research Center where he was responsible for administering a $7 million NIH grant to research alternative therapies for cardiovascular diseases. The center was one of the first in the country to place alternative therapies and their scientific examination in an academic context.

Dr. Heyman has held several leadership positions in the field of Integrative Medicine. He was the national clinical working group co-chair of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine for 4 years, a collaboration of 57 North American universities involved in Integrative Medicine. He is the online editor for the Journal of Men's Health in the section of Integrative Medicine, and he also holds the position of Editor-In-Chief of the Internet Journal of Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine. His research interests include the Stress response and NeuroEndocrinology, Cardiometabolic Disease, Men's Health and clinical outcomes research methodologies.

Dr. Heyman remains clinically active as well, as the owner of a four-physician integrative medicine practice in Northern Virginia at the Virginia Center for Health and Wellness. He is also the President of Integrative Health Resources, a small group of clinical experts that consults to physicians, health systems and public health professionals seeking to develop wellness, lifestyle and nutrition programs. Finally, Dr. Heyman has been featured on the Discovery Channel, Martha Stewart Living Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, Natural Health Magazine and appeared in many other TV and print venues and is a widely sought after, and celebrated speaker around the world on many Integrative Medicine topics. His teaching approach is described as deeply rooted in scientific evidence, grounded in the clinical reality of expert patient care, and readily accessible to both the new learner and seasoned practitioner alike.

Dr. Richard Horowitz is a board-certified internist and member of the Federal Tick-Borne Disease Working Group. As medical director of the Hudson Valley Healing Arts Center, he has treated over 12,000 chronic Lyme patients with classical and integrative approaches, creating an effective model to address those with resistant chronic illness.

James LaValle, RPh, CCN, is a nationally recognized clinical pharmacist, author, board certified clinical nutritionist, founder of Metabolic Code Enterprises, Inc., a web platform and practice solution enterprise, launching AIR Support and the Metabolic Code Assessment. In addition, he founded Practices at Progressive Medical Center in Orange County, CA. In 2001, he founded and operated LaValle Metabolic Institute, an interdisciplinary medicine facility in Cincinnati for the past 15 years (sold in 2014) where he served thousands of patients using his metabolic model for health.

He also founded Integrative Health Resources 15 years ago, which is focused as a natural products industry consulting company. James has 27 years of experience integrating natural therapies into various medical and business model. James is probably best known for his expertise in natural therapeutics application and drug/nutrient depletion issues and uncovering the underlying metabolic issues that keep people from feeling healthy and vital. As such he has written hundreds of articles for a variety of industry journals and publications, and has lectured for thousands of healthcare professionals and consumer audiences globally on these topics. He was a founding author of the NHI on Demand database and spearheaded the Lexi Comp databases relating to natural therapeutics.

He is author of 16 e-books and 20 books including the most recently released, Your Blood Never Lies, as well as his best seller, Cracking the Metabolic Code, along with Smart Medicine for Healthier Living, Nutritional Cost of Drugs and the Cox 2 Connection. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. Additionally, he has advanced clinical training through the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. LePine is a staff physician with Dr. Mark Hyman at The UltraWellness Center located in Lenox, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. Prior to joining the UltraWellness Center Dr. LePine worked as a staff physician at Canyon Ranch Health Spa in Lenox, Massachusetts consulting with patients from around the world looking for optimal health.

He is a faculty member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. In addition he has taught physicians throughout the United States and around the globe. His areas of interest within medicine include: The Human Microbiome and its effect in health and disease, the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. NutriGenomics, Optimal Aging, Autoimmune diseases and Detoxification.

Pamela Wartian Smith, M.D., MPH, MS spent her first twenty years of practice as an emergency room physician with the Detroit Medical Center and then the next twenty years as an Anti-Aging/Functional Medicine specialist. She is a diplomat of the Board of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Physicians and is an internationally known speaker and author on the subject of Metabolic, Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine. She also holds a Master’s in Public Health Degree along with a Master’s Degree in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine.

She has been featured on CNN, PBS, and many other television networks, has been interviewed in numerous consumer magazines, and has hosted two of her own radio shows. She is a regular contributor for Fox News Radio. Dr. Smith is currently the Director of the Center for Personalized Medicine and the founder of The Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Functional Medicine. Dr. Smith is also the co-director of the Master’s Program in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at the Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida. In addition, she is the Director of Medical Education for the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Filomena Trindade MD, MPH

Filomena Trindade, MD, MPH is a teacher, author, and international sought after lecturer in functional medicine. She is a graduate of the fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine and teaches in the Fellowship which is also a master’s program. In addition she is faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). After obtaining her BA degree in Biology she went on to finish a master’s in Public Health in the area of environmental health and epidemiology before starting medical school. She graduated first in her class in family practice from the University of California Davis School of Medicine and did her residency training in family practice at the U.C. San Francisco/Santa Rosa Program. She has been in clinical practice for over 22 years. Before starting her own private practice in 2004 in functional medicine she was the medical director of a non-profit organization that catered to the underserved. Her work has been published in Townsend Letter, Guide to Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine, Saúde Actual, and the Border Health Journal. She is currently very active in developing teaching programs in Functional Medicine in the USA, Latin America and Europe.
