Course Description

Module II will present both basic and clinical cardiovascular information for the non-cardiologist. It is designed as the optimal educational program with didactics, case studies, clinical applications, protocols, and plenty of time for interaction with the faculty. It is the best CV program available with the top faculty in their respective fields. By learning what is taught in this module, you will be able to apply the concepts to many other diseases. You will learn how to diagnosis, test, interpret results, prevent and treat patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, obesity, heart disease, CHD, MI, CHF, metabolic cardiology learn all the new risk factors for CHD, the role of the GI tract in CHD the role of nutrition and supplements and drugs in CVD and much more.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the role of endothelial dysfunction, nitric oxide, angiotensin II and aldosterone in atherosclerosis, CHD and CVD
  • Understand how inflammation, oxidative stress and vascular immune dysfunction promote CVD and CHD
  • Be familiar with the pathways of vascular aging, pathogenesis, and how they relate to the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, CHD and CVD
  • Review the underlying causes and mechanisms of dyslipidemia and dyslipidemia-induced cardiovascular disease
  • Understand and apply advanced lipid testing (lipid particle number and size and HDL functionality and quality) for the diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemia in clinical practice
  • Present, review and discuss clinical cases on hypertension, dyslipidemia, CHD and CVD
  • Measure the three finite vascular responses (inflammation, oxidative stress and vascular immune function), plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone to select optimal integrative anti-hypertensive therapy to reduce BP and decrease CVD
  • Treat with nutrition, supplements and drugs for CHD and CHF
  • Understand the role of vascular biology in atherosclerosis vascular disease, CHD and CVD
  • Review and understand the role of the microbiome in CVD
  • Review and understand the role of insulin resistance, obesity, inflammation and diabetes in CVD
  • Review and understand drug -nutrient reactions and interactions in CVD

Jill Carnahan,

Jill Carnahan, MD, ABFM, ABIHM, completed her residency at the University of Illinois Program in Family Medicine at Methodist Medical Center. In 2006 she was voted by faculty to receive the Resident Teacher of the Year award and elected to Central Illinois 40 Leaders Under 40. She received her medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and her Bachelor of Science degree in Bio-Engineering at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She is dually board-certified in Family Medicine (ABFM) and Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM).

She was also part of the first 100+ health-care practitioners to be certified in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFMCP). In 2008, Dr. Carnahan’s vision for health and healing resulted in the creation of Methodist Center for Integrative Medicine in Peoria, IL where she served as the Medical Director for 2 years. In 2010, she founded Flatiron Functional Medicine in Boulder, Colorado where she partnered in functional medicine with medical partner, Dr. Robert Rountree. She recently opened a brand new medical clinic with a broad range of services in Louisville, Colorado. Dr. Carnahan is also 14-year survivor of breast cancer and Crohn’s disease and passionate about teaching patients how to “live well” and thrive in the midst of complex and chronic illness. She is also committed to teaching other physicians how to address underlying cause of illness rather than just treating symptoms through the principles of functional medicine. She is a prolific writer, speaker, and loves to infuse others with her passion for health and healing!

Mark C. Houston, MD, MS, ABAARM, FACP, is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Clinical Instructor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Health Care Sciences at George Washington University (GWU), Director of the Hypertension Institute and Vascular Biology and Medical Director of the Division of Human Nutrition at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN.

Dr Houston was selected as one of the Top Physicians in Hypertension in the US in 2008-2014 by the Consumer Research Council, and by USA Today as one of the Most Influential Doctors in the US in both Hypertension and Hyperlipidemia twice in 2009- 2010. He was selected as The Patient’s Choice Award in 2010 -2012 by Consumer Reports USA. He is triple boarded certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) (FASH) and the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM, FMNM). He holds two Masters of Science degrees in HUMAN NUTRITION from the University of Bridgeport, CT and another in METABOLIC and NUTRITIONAL MEDICINE (University of South Florida School of Medicine-Tampa). Dr. Houston has presented over 10,000 lectures, nationally and internationally and published over 250 medical articles, scientific abstracts in peer reviewed medical journals , books and book chapters.. Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra is a board-certified cardiologist and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut. Certified as a bioenergetic psychotherapist, and nutrition and anti-aging specialist, Dr. Sinatra integrates psychological, nutraceutical and electroceutical therapies in the matrix of healing. He is the founder of www.heartmdinstitute.com, an informational website dedicated to promoting public awareness of integrative medicine. Dr. Sinatra is a fellow in the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Nutrition.  Dr. Sinatra’s latest book, co-authored with Tommy Rosa, is Health Revelations from Heaven and Earth.

Pamela Wartian Smith, M.D., MPH, MS spent her first twenty years of practice as an emergency room physician with the Detroit Medical Center and then the next twenty years as an Anti-Aging/Functional Medicine specialist. She is a diplomat of the Board of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Physicians and is an internationally known speaker and author on the subject of Metabolic, Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine. She also holds a Master’s in Public Health Degree along with a Master’s Degree in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine.

She has been featured on CNN, PBS, and many other television networks, has been interviewed in numerous consumer magazines, and has hosted two of her own radio shows. She is a regular contributor for Fox News Radio. Dr. Smith is currently the Director of the Center for Personalized Medicine and the founder of The Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Functional Medicine. Dr. Smith is also the co-director of the Master’s Program in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at the Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida. In addition, she is the Director of Medical Education for the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Filomena Trindade, MD, MPH is a teacher, author, and international sought after lecturer in functional medicine. She is a graduate of the fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine and teaches in the Fellowship which is also a master’s program. In addition she is faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). After obtaining her BA degree in Biology she went on to finish a master’s in Public Health in the area of environmental health and epidemiology before starting medical school. She graduated first in her class in family practice from the University of California Davis School of Medicine and did her residency training in family practice at the U.C. San Francisco/Santa Rosa Program. She has been in clinical practice for over 22 years. Before starting her own private practice in 2004 in functional medicine she was the medical director of a non-profit organization that catered to the underserved. Her work has been published in Townsend Letter, Guide to Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine, Saúde Actual, and the Border Health Journal. She is currently very active in developing teaching programs in Functional Medicine in the USA, Latin America and Europe.
