Module XVI-A: Advanced Cardiovascular Health Broken into three distinct topic areas—including vascular biology, vascular aging, and hypertension—this advanced cardiology module will begin with the exploration of vascular biology concepts, and the relation to vascular disease, and subsequently delve into the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of vascular aging and management of hypertension. Focusing on evidence-based research with an emphasis on controlled clinical trials and peer-reviewed studies, sessions will additionally review care from an integrative perspective. Faculty member Mark Houston is considered a world-renowned expert in the fields of cardiology and hypertension, with an exemplary educational background and extensive experience in academic teaching. Attendees will not only learn direct applications for cardiovascular concepts, coupled with intensive didactic learning, but also internalize specific patient case studies and presentations. Ample time will be dedicated to interaction with Dr. Houston and peers, with an intimate environment dedicated to Q&A opportunities: in order to facilitate a rigorous and thorough background of Integrative and Metabolic Cardiovascular Medicine.

Learning Objectives

Review the role of vascular biology in atherosclerosis vascular disease, CHD, and CVD
Understand the role of endothelial dysfunction, nitric oxide, angiotensin II, and aldosterone in atherosclerosis, CHD, and CVD
Explore how inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular immune dysfunction promote CVD and CHD
Define the relationships between the finite vascular responses to the “infinite” range of vascular insults
Discuss nutrition in the treatment of vascular aging
Understand, review, discuss, select, and apply laboratory testing for vascular aging—and new noninvasive diagnostic cardiovascular tests for vascular aging
Understand the pathogenesis of hypertension and the role of vascular biology, three finite vascular responses (inflammation, oxidative stress and vascular immune function), plasma renin activity (PRA), and aldosterone to select optimal integrative anti-hypertensive therapy to reduce BP and decrease CVD
Understand cell energy concepts, and the application to vascular disease and hypertension
Discuss the application of exercise and weight management in the treatment of hypertension
Discuss the application of mitochondrial function to vascular disease and hypertension
