Description

There are very few retina specialists who offer holistic integrative retinal care to their patients and believe in caring for the patient as a whole, as opposed to focusing only on the eye and the patient’s ocular symptoms. These doctors often discuss lifestyle triggers and modifications with patients and look at treating the mind, body, and spirit.

I educate my patients on how our lifestyle plays a pivotal role in our overall health and more specifically our eye and retinal health. I ask them detailed questions about their health history, including medication use, previous infections, childhood history, stress level, coping mechanisms, details about their diet, sleep habits, exercise, and support from their families and community. I also bring awareness to the effects of environmental factors, such as toxins in food, and household products on their overall eye health. Many retinal conditions in the aging population are chronic and are related to a complex variety of factors many of which are controllable with a healthy lifestyle.

Like the saying goes “the eye is the window to the soul” and I personally think the retina is the window to the soul the mind and the body.  So everything I recommend for retinal health usually has a direct positive effect on the rest of our overall health.
