Deborah R. Simkin, MD, DFAACAP

Dr. Simkin is a board-certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist who is certified in Functional Medicine by the Institute of Functional Medicine, and in Complementary and Integrative Medicine by the American Board of Integrative Medicine. She is also certified in Neurofeedback by BCIA. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Emory Medical School where she teaches Functional Medicine. She has served as Co-Chair of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s (AACAP) Committee on Complementary and Integrative Medicine for 10 years. Prior to that, she served as Co-Chair of the AACAP Addiction Committee. She is a Distinguished Fellow for AACAP. She represented AACAP as Co-Chair for the ASAM Revision of Patient Placement Criteria for Treatment of Adolescent Substance-Related Disorders and represented AACAP at the Physician Leadership on National Drug Policy for Adolescent Substance Abuse at NIDA. She also served as the Liaison to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Substance Abuse.

She co-edited 2 textbooks on Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric (CAP) Disorders for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America. She is well known for her expertise in the Gut-Brain Axis and has written several chapters and articles on the subject. She and her Co-Chair, Gene Arnold, are Co-Editing 2 more textbooks on Complementary and Integrative Medicine/Functional Medicine (CIM/FM) in CAP Disorders and are establishing Clinical Updates in CIM/FM for AACAP. She has spoken internationally and nationally on CIM topics in the area of TBI, PTSD, gut-brain axis, autism, meditation, ADHD, refractory depression, and mood disorders and authored over 30 articles or chapters. She was a co-editor for the Adolescent Section of the ASAM textbook.

She has served as faculty at Dartmouth, LSU, USA, Florida State medical schools, and served as residency director at USA. She received the most outstanding faculty teaching award at LSU, USA, and Emory.
