Course Description

This module is dedicated to understanding several key aspects to arguably the most important lifestyle habits that people need to engage in to maintain health and vitality as they are aging – successful diet and exercise programming. Strategies will be explored in dietary nutrition, training and supplementation that can be applied for everyone from the unfit and overweight beginner to the overstrained athlete, with an emphasis on how to lower risks for injury, loss of lean mass and risks of overtraining.

All of the lecture material will be reinforced with active learning techniques such as case studies, active participation in exercise prescription, using a glucometer for managing weight and identifying food tolerance along with visual learning experiences with food and diet and label guidelines and hand-outs for how to count carbs for the average person.

Jason G. Biondo, DC, MS is the Clinical Director of the Karel Lewit Clinic and CIHP Jupiter where he serves as lead clinical practitioner overseeing daily operations and patient management. Dr. Biondo received his Doctorate from Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, MO where he graduated with the honor of being awarded the Al Chamberlain Student Doctor Award for exemplary clinical performance.

Dr. Biondo also received a Master’s Degree in Sports Science and Rehabilitation from Logan University Programs. Dr. Biondo works with a variety of patients from chronic low back and pain patients to high performance professional athletes bridging the continuum from rehab to performance. His special interests include conservative management of shoulder and lower extremity injuries, sports and spine rehabilitation, and performance training.

Dr. Biondo is full body certified in Active Release Technique and also holds certification through the Motion Palpation Institute and Prague School of Rehab.

Gary Huber, DO

Gary Huber, DO spent 20 years as an Emergency Medicine physician before evolving his practice to integrative care. Integrative medicine is the pursuit of ideal health by seeking and reversing the cause of illness to go beyond the simple reduction of symptoms.

Dr. Huber is an Adjunct Professor teaching Integrative Medicine practice at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy as well as a clinical preceptor for pharmacy students. Dr. Huber also lectures on hormone replacement therapies, cardiovascular care, sports medicine and other integrative medicine topics for the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

He has developed the Huber Personalized Weight Loss Program that has proven very successful in promoting healthy weight loss as well as reversing Metabolic Syndrome issues. Dr. Huber has a long held interest in nutrition and human physiology as it relates to wellness and longevity.

Laura LaValle RD, LD

Laura has a bachelor's of science degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Akron, and has completed Level 2 certificate training in Adult Weight Management through the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She has worked as a dietitian in a variety of nutrition venues. She is currently the Vice President of Nutrition Content, Education, and Programs for Integrative Health Resources, LLC, overseeing the nutrition and dietetics content and development for projects such as a health and wellness portal called Health Elements, and more recently for the Metabolic Code Diet Program now launching into pharmacy and integrative medicine physician practices. As part of this project, Laura helped develop a line of low glycemic, gluten-free frozen meals for Artisan Bistro Pro Direct. Laura helped train Life Time Fitness dietitians on the usage of the Metabolic Code as a comprehensive weight management tool for clients.

In addition she is a nutrition writer and editor on a variety of projects for Integrative Health Resources, including articles in Life Time Fitness' online newsletter Flourish, authoring articles in Total Health Breakthroughs (an online newsletter) and a LaValle newsletter, The Healing Prescription. Laura was also a contributor and co-editor on Cracking the Metabolic Code (Basic Health Publications 2004) and Your Blood Never Lies (Square One Publishers 2013).

Laura's past dietetics experience includes working as a hospital-based dietitian (working in I.C.U. and cardiac rehab), and nutritional counselor at LaValle Metabolic Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio (where she continues to serve as the Director of Dietetics Services.) Laura has also worked in sales and education in the dietary supplement industry.

Her education and work experience shows a long line of career choices focused on her commitment to two primary goals - helping people have the knowledge and tools to see the difference good nutrition can make in their life and furthering healthcare in the United States toward a system that better utilizes proven dietary supplements for both health and wellness and better management of health conditions.

James LaValle, RPh, CCN is a nationally recognized clinical pharmacist, author, board certified clinical nutritionist, founder of Metabolic Code Enterprises, Inc., a web platform and practice solution enterprise, launching AIR Support and the Metabolic Code Assessment. In addition, he founded Practices at Progressive Medical Center in Orange County, CA. In 2001, he founded and operated LaValle Metabolic Institute, an interdisciplinary medicine facility in Cincinnati for the past 15 years (sold in 2014) where he served thousands of patients using his metabolic model for health.

He also founded Integrative Health Resources 15 years ago, which is focused as a natural products industry consulting company. James has 27 years of experience integrating natural therapies into various medical and business model. James is probably best known for his expertise in natural therapeutics application and drug/nutrient depletion issues and uncovering the underlying metabolic issues that keep people from feeling healthy and vital. As such he has written hundreds of articles for a variety of industry journals and publications, and has lectured for thousands of healthcare professionals and consumer audiences globally on these topics. He was a founding author of the NHI on Demand database and spearheaded the Lexi Comp databases relating to natural therapeutics.

Bob is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, the former Director of Sports Nutrition for the University of Florida and most recently served as a sport dietitian for the US Olympic Committee. Bob traveled to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games as a sport dietitian for the US Olympic Team and the personal sport dietitian for the Olympic Triathlon Team.

Bob has a bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sports Science, a master's degree in Health and Exercise Science and a second master's degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition. He is a registered dietitian, exercise physiologist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a High Performance Triathlon Coach. As a nutrition coach, Bob specializes in enhancing health and improving performance by improving metabolic efficiency and using nutrition periodization, which provides varying nutrition recommendations to each specific athlete based on training cycle changes and body composition and weight goals.

Robert is a fitness enthusiast and health advocate with special interests and training. He holds a degree in pharmacy from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Robert is a principal owner and CEO Partell Pharmacy, and specializes in hormone replacement therapy and functional medicine with pharmaceutical-grade nutritional supplements.

He is a fellowship-trained member of The American Academy of Anti-Aging, Functional, and Rejuvenative Medicine (A4M) and is currently pursuing his master’s degree.

Robert frequently lectures to medical practitioners on evidence-based approaches to natural hormone replacement in age management medicine as well as nutritional intervention for the treatment of chronic disease.

Rick Stassi

Rick has very extensive knowledge of the human body. He graduated from Stanford’s paramedic program and is a retired fireman/paramedic. His Master’s Degree is in Kinesiology (study of human movement) with an emphasis in exercise physiology, sports medicine, biomechanics, and motor development. For the last 25 years, he has trained over 300 professional and Olympic athletes. He has worked for the Seattle Mariners, Anaheim Splash and Anaheim Ducks. He trained Cal State Fullerton’s baseball team for 10 years. Over 100 players signed professional contracts during those 10 years.

He has developed conditioning programs for Olympic Gold Medal swimmers (one performance was voted the number 2 Summer Olympic performance in history), athletes in the MLB (one is a record holder for most total bases, 19 in one game), NBA, NFL, LPGA, NHL, CISL, MLS, a Heisman award winner, 2 Golden Spikes’ award winners, an ESPY award winner, and a Guinness record holder for highest single leg box jump.

Chris J. Wehr, MD, FACS, FACC, FMNM received his BS degree in Zoology at Duke University. He attended medical school at The Ohio State University. After graduation Dr. Wehr did a 10 year fellowship in General, Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery at Vanderbilt University. During his surgical residency he was an NIH research fellow. His research interests were Prostaglandins, brain blood flow regulation, and MRI. After completing his residency he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to practice adult Cardiovascular Surgery.

One of the attractive features of the Albuquerque practice was the active heart transplant program. He was active in the transplant community being on the UNOS region 5 review board and an investigator for artificial heart devices. Over the next 20 years in Albuquerque his interests evolved to include endoluminal aortic stent grafting, the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, and the treatment of vein diseases. He is boarded in Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Ultrasound, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. A long standing interest in endurance sports, particularly cycling, lead to an association with several professional and amateur cycling teams as a medical consultant and as team doctor for the Astana cycling team for the Tour of California.In 2013 Dr. Wehr decided to devote himself entirely to Integrative Medicine. He completed the Advanced Fellowship in Anti-aging and Regenerative Medicine while beginning his practice with BodyLogicMD of Orlando. He has recently completed the Weight Management Medicine Fellowship. His interests now are focused on the optimization of human performance and weight management.
