This workshop is a 2-day Master Class for all physicians interested in developing and advancing their skills in the field of integrative medicine by reviewing new approaches to complex medical cases. It constitutes a clinical systems biology approach to medicine, with particular emphasis on the role the immune system plays in a variety of chronic illnesses. This practical exploration of metabolism organizes complex patient presentations into distinct, measurable sub-categories to ensure effective assessment and individualized wellness plan development and execution. Adequate time will be devoted to case analysis, group discussion and translation of knowledge into critical thinking skills.

Learning Objectives

• Review the evidence and framework for the Macy Model of Therapeutic encounters and develop emotional competency by understanding patient in context.
• Explore the relationship between cortisol, the central and peripheral nervous and the immune system.
• Understand the deeper, evidence-based aspects of the impact stress can have on serious illnesses such as chronic infections, neurodegenerative disorders, and auto-immune conditions.
• Understand the ways in which the Cardiometabolic patient is also at risk for cognitive, immune, and gastrointestinal disorders.
• Review the evidence for diet, botanicals and supplements to manage systemic inflammation and oxidative stress that is resulting in skin disorders such as acne, wrinkles and volume loss, hydration and pH balance.
• Review the role exposures play in chronic inflammation, and in particular, the role genetics play in predetermining susceptibility, as well as the impact innate immune activation has on the brain.
