Module XIII: Clinical Hands-On Hair Transplantation

Upon completion of the module, the participant will:

  • Review history of hair transplantation in aesthetic medicine
  • Discuss anatomy relative to hair transplantation including hair anatomy and histology, anatomy of the scalp, physiology of hair growth, and differences in gene expression
  • Understand the effects of medications and hair transplantation
  • Examine hair loss related to androgenetic alopecia
  • Be proficient in conducting an aesthetic consultation for patients considering hair transplantation.  This includes understanding patient expectations, predicting clinical outcomes, and effectively communicating this to patients.  It also includes proven strategies for conducting successful consultations where patients are comfortable with hair transplantation procedure as well as the risks and benefits.  All necessary forms and protocols for pre-procedural care, post –procedural care, patient education, procedural documentation, and patient consent will be reviewed and made available
  • Analyze benefits of the addition of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells and platelet rich plasma to hair grafts for optimal results
  • Possess a working knowledge of approaches to donor harvesting
  • Understand principles of graft preparation
  • Discuss principles of recipient graft site preparation and incision, as well as graft placement and insertion
  • Understand anesthetic techniques utilized in hair transplantation
  • Participate in an interactive session with experts performing live demonstrations of “best practice” techniques in hair transplantation
  • Provide live hair transplantation procedures including aesthetic consultations, treatment planning, and patient education according to “best practice” standards.  These cases will be done with an expert instructor in hair transplantation techniques
  • Correctly prevent and manage hair transplantation complications
