Dr. Raymond Raven

Dr. Ray Raven is a luminary in the field of orthopaedic surgery, renowned for his comprehensive expertise and visionary leadership in healthcare. His journey, marked by groundbreaking achievements in surgery, innovation, and patient care, now embraces a holistic focus on wellness and prevention as both a clinician and lifestyle medicine enthusiast.

Born and raised in California, Dr. Raven began his academic path at the University of California, Irvine, earning a degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry before completing his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco. His extensive surgical training, enriched by international experience, provided him with deep expertise across the spectrum of orthopaedic surgery.

In his distinguished career, Dr. Raven has become one of the few triple board-certified surgeons in the nation—holding certifications in Orthopaedic Surgery, Surgery of the Hand, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he cares for patients with hand and upper extremity conditions, teaches residents and fellows, and contributes to advancing orthopaedic education and clinical research.

Dr. Raven’s leadership extends beyond academia and clinical care. As the upcoming President of the California Orthopaedic Association (COA) in 2025, he continues to shape state and national policy to improve musculoskeletal care delivery and physician well-being.

As Co-founder and former CEO of Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists (OSS), Dr. Raven spearheaded the transformation of the practice from a small two-physician office into a multidisciplinary musculoskeletal institute, integrating orthopaedics, pain management, physical therapy, and advanced imaging. His success in expanding OSS reflects his belief in value-driven, coordinated care models that improve both patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

His innovative spirit also led to the creation of SMaRT Health & Wellness, a venture designed to bridge the gap between traditional healthcare and proactive wellness. The initiative embodies his belief that lifestyle optimization—through movement, nutrition, stress management, and recovery—is essential to musculoskeletal and overall health.

Dr. Raven’s influence extends into education and technology. As a long-standing member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), he co-founded Hand.e, the Society’s flagship educational platform, and served as the first Deputy Editor for Social Media for the Journal of Hand Surgery. His work has modernized how surgeons access and share knowledge globally.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Raven is an entrepreneur, inventor, and advocate for digital health innovation. Holding multiple medical device patents, he combines clinical insight with an MBA from UC Irvine and a Master’s in Healthcare Innovation from the University of Pennsylvania to reimagine how healthcare systems deliver value.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Raven lives a life of balance and curiosity. He enjoys chess, photography, mountain biking, golf, and Shotokan karate, and often travels with his wife, Despina.
