Course Description

This module reviews the most recent developments in the field of neurology utilizing a metabolic approach to the prevention, management & treatment of neurologic diseases. This course will cover pathophysiology & the role of neurotransmitters, inflammatory & degenerative disorders, neurovascular diseases, psychological & psychiatric syndromes, the gut-immune-brain connection and healthy brain function.

Learning Objectives

Mark Filidei, DO, is an Internal Medicine physician and is the Director of Integrative Medicine for the Amen Clinics. Integrative Medicine brings together conventional medicine with complementary and alternative therapies. Dr Filidei’s approach is to find the root cause of a person’s health problems including metabolic, genetic, and environmental factors, and to treat those problems in as natural a way as possible by using targeted nutritional supplements, correcting hormone and metabolic imbalances, improving lifestyle and diet, and detecting and treating toxin exposure and infections.

At the heart of the Amen Method is the understanding that in order to effectively treat the brain, you must treat the entire body. As an expert in this field, Dr. Filidei advises not only patients at the Amen Clinics, but the physicians as well. Dr. Filidei is highly experienced in integrative/alternative medicine modalities as well as conventional medicine and sees patients in person at the Amen Clinics Orange County. In addition, he also makes himself available for consultations via Skype and over the phone with patients from all other Amen Clinics. Prior to joining the Amen Clinics, he served as the medical director of the Whitaker Wellness Institute, the largest Integrative Medicine clinic in the United States where he spent over a decade treating thousands of patients for multiple complex medical issues. Dr. Filidei is well versed in utilizing a variety of therapies to help strengthen, heal, and detoxify the body including Hormone replacement Therapy, IV therapies, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, and Metabolic/Functional Medicine. He is board certified in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, and is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management. Dr. Filidei also specializes in treating pain patients with Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma), which can treat many chronic pain conditions without surgery.

Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. Additionally, he has advanced clinical training through the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. LePine is a staff physician with Dr. Mark Hyman at The UltraWellness Center located in Lenox, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. Prior to joining the UltraWellness Center Dr. LePine worked as a staff physician at Canyon Ranch Health Spa in Lenox, Massachusetts consulting with patients from around the world looking for optimal health.

He is a faculty member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. In addition he is a clinical speaker for Genova Diagnostics Laboratory and Designs for Health. His areas of interest within medicine include: The Human Microbiome and its effect in health and disease, the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. NutriGenomics, Optimal Aging, Autoimmune diseases and Detoxification.

Dr Lombard, DO is the Chief of Neurology at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. In addition to his clinical duties, he is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Pharmacology at Touro Medical College, Assistant Professor of Neurology at Cornell Medical School and a Clinical Instructor of Neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is the author of several critically acclaimed books, including the recently published work; "Freedom from Disease".

Dr Lombard has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally on the role of nutrition in brain function. He has appeared on Larry King, MSNBC, NBC news and the Early Show. In addition to his medical advisory role to the pharmaceutical ,biotech venture capital and dietary supplement industry, Dr Lombard has also served as the medical consultant to several Hollywood feature films including "Departed" directed by Martin Scorcese and "Manchurian Candidate" directed by Jonathan Demme.

Pamela Wartian Smith, M.D., MPH, MS spent her first twenty years of practice as an emergency room physician with the Detroit Medical Center and then the next twenty years as an Anti-Aging/Functional Medicine specialist. She is a diplomat of the Board of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Physicians and is an internationally known speaker and author on the subject of Metabolic, Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine. She also holds a Master’s in Public Health Degree along with a Master’s Degree in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine.

She has been featured on CNN, PBS, and many other television networks, has been interviewed in numerous consumer magazines, and has hosted two of her own radio shows. She is a regular contributor for Fox News Radio. Dr. Smith is currently the Director of the Center for Personalized Medicine and the founder of The Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Functional Medicine. Dr. Smith is also the co-director of the Master’s Program in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at the Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida. In addition, she is the Director of Medical Education for the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Dr. Elizabeth Stuller, MD earned her B.A in Psychology from Louisiana State University in 1984. She earned her M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine in 2000 and completed her residency training in Psychiatry at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA where she served as a Chief Resident and was voted by faculty the John R. Benson Award "For Outstanding Teaching Skills during Residency Training". She completed her Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore MD in 2007. She was ABPN Board Certified in Psychiatry in May of 2007 and ABPN Board Certified in Addiction Psychiatry in May of 2008.

Dr Stuller has experience in treating adults, adolescents, and geriatric populations in all aspects of psychiatry and addiction medicine. In addition to working at the Amen Clinic, Dr Stuller is principal owner and CEO of Stuller Resettings, LLC, where she works in Baltimore City with EHP Behavioral Services treating Dual Diagnosis patients at Union Memorial Hospital. She additionally teaches medical residents at Union Memorial Hospital, and volunteers with the City of Baltimore Staying Alive Program on “the block” in inner city Baltimore and also serves on the State of Maryland Med Chi Physicians Health Committee overseeing case management of impaired physicians. She is the former Chief of Psychiatry at Baltimore Behavioral Health where she co-directed the Ambulatory Detoxification Unit, and the Partial , Intensive Outpatient and CRP Programs. She has additionally worked at the Veterans Hospital in Baltimore MD and Philadelphia, PA with training in the pain, methadone, PTSD, geriatric, in patient, and outpatient ambulatory clinics, individual and group psychotherapy. She has also worked in the evening program at the Kolmac Clinic in Columbia, MD with experience in ambulatory outpatient Methadone and Suboxone Detoxification and Maintenance Programs respectively. She has additional training in Pain Management, Eating Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Group Psychotherapy and SPECT neuroimaging.

Dr. Sahar Swidan obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Michigan and then she completed a 3 year research fellowship in Bio-Pharmaceutics at the University of Michigan. She previously was the Director of Pharmacy at Chelsea Community Hospital and the clinical pharmacist for the inpatient head and chronic pain service. Currently she is President & CEO of Pharmacy Solutions in Ann Arbor, MI which is a unique, personal and educational specialty pharmacy and Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan, College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Swidan is board certified and an advanced fellow in anti-aging and regenerative medicine. Dr. Swidan is an internationally known speaker in the areas of pain management and BHRT and she has authored several books, articles and patient education material in the area of pain management and functional medicine. Currently, she is completing a Master's program in Cardio-Metabolic and Functional Medicine.
