Life so many others, I am a Midwest transplant to NYC, arriving just in time for the last few years of the Koch administration, and settling initially in Morningside Heights: West 113th between Broadway & Amsterdam.
I like to think I combine the groundedness & integrity of that region with a new-found cosmopolitanism & drive for lifelong learning.
From 1984 to 1987, I was a Wall Street trading assistant & then junior equities analyst.
From 1987 to 1989, a Columbia University development researcher.
In 1990, after a tragic, early death of someone very close to me, I switched gears dramatically & embarked upon my medical research life, as a clinical trials assistant & medical writer at St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village. I did this work until 2007, often moon lighting for pharmaceutical companies in order to pay the bills.
In 2009 I traded computer-based work for direct patient care, egged on by my many MD friends at the time, first in acupuncture & Chinese herbal medicine, and later in the more diagnostics & nutrition-based world of functional medicine, through the IFM.
Today I consider myself lucky to be able to knowledgeably draw from the two approaches-- both for preventive health & wellness as well as for healthy aging.
