Joel Heidelbaugh, MD

Dr. Heidelbaugh is a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Urology and the Director of Medical Student Education and Clerkship Director in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is a family physician with over 24 years of academic teaching experience whose clinical practice includes full scope inpatient and outpatient medicine (except active obstetrics) and includes many office-based procedures. His specialty areas of clinical practice and research include gastrointestinal disorders, men's health, primary care urology, and medical education. Dr. Heidelbaugh is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association guideline panels for irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and Lynch syndrome. He is the co-editor and co-author of the textbook ROME IV: Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders for Primary Care and Non-GI Clinicians published through the Rome Foundation and is the primary care lead for the ROME V Committee. He is the Consulting Editor of Primary Care: Clinics in Office Practice and an Associate Editor of Conn’s Current Therapy. Dr. Heidelbaugh is a member of the editorial board of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) National Journal Club which was created in 2020 to provide diplomates of the ABFM with evidence-based appraisals of current literature and to offer credit for maintenance of certification. Since 2007, he has served as the Consulting Editor for Primary Care Clinics in Office Practice, and is also an editorial board member of the American Academy of Family Physicians CME Monograph series, FP Essentials. Dr. Heidelbaugh is the past-president of the Ame rican Society for Men's Health and a member of the American Urological Association guideline panels for male sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer screening. He has authored over 70 peer reviewed manuscripts and a dozen textbooks.
