Module VII: Autoimmune Diseases focuses on inflammatory disorders, autoimmune diseases, allergies, cancer, and the gut-immune-brain connection. Because the incidence of autoimmune disease has increased dramatically in the past few decades, this module explores the primary disorders from an Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine approach: chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, Grace’s disease, and lupus. Cellular and molecular biology of immunity, the cellular stress response, oxidation, genetic damage, inflammation, etiology of disease including environmental and lifestyle factors, and the risk for cancer development are also reviewed. Clinical approaches to patient evaluations, testing, and disease management are provided, in addition to an understanding of the role that low dose naltrexone plays as a therapy for autoimmune disease. Attendees will gain insights regarding new therapies for pain control, and further knowledge surrounding the role of toxic burden in overall health, with detoxification methods including chelation.
