Cardiovascular Certification

Advanced Metabolic Cardiovascular Certification

The Advanced Metabolic Cardiovascular Certification consists of four courses: Modules A – D. As cardiovascular disease (CVD) becomes an increasingly serious and widespread public health problem, there is a growing and pressing need for prevention-focused education. Due to the wide-ranging risk factors that impact CVD—metabolic syndromes like dyslipidemia, hypertension, obesity, insulin resistance, and hyperglycemia, behavioral factors including physical inactivity, smoking, and unhealthy diet, and genetic causes like family history, age and gender—education in advanced cardiology must be multifaceted and comprehensive.

Because of the immense financial and social burdens of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, it is critical for clinicians and advanced cardiovascular specialists to be appropriately educated in lifestyle modification and therapeutic programs.

The goal of this certification program is to provide medical professionals with a comprehensive review of advanced cardiology: focusing on the biological basis of cardiovascular structure and function, and diagnosis and treatment of CVD. The modules will focus on topics including vascular biology and disease, endothelial dysfunction, the roles of inflammation and oxidative stress, hypertension, causes of vascular aging, different testing strategies, early detection and treatment with nutrition and nutraceutical supplements, dyslipidemia, the analysis of cardiovascular risk factors, mediators and cardiovascular risk scoring, early identification of cardiovascular issues, and different applications of treatment.

This advanced cardiology program allows healthcare practitioners & professionals to fully comprehend and internalize the broad spectrum of issues intrinsically linked to cardiovascular disease, and provides clinicians with the necessary education to understand the multi-factorial causes of cardiovascular disease—and the current clinical education surrounding treatment options.

Upon completion of this module, the participant will:

  • Understand the role of vascular biology, endothelial dysfunction, nitric oxide, angiotensin II and aldosterone in atherosclerosis vascular disease, CHD and CVD.
  • Understand how inflammation, oxidative stress and vascular immune dysfunction promote CVD and CHD.
  • Define the relationships of the finite vascular responses to the “infinite” range of vascular insults.
  • Discuss the pathways of vascular aging, pathogenesis, and how they relate to the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, CHD and CVD.
  • Understand the pathogenesis of hypertension and the role of vascular biology, three finite vascular responses (inflammation, oxidative stress and vascular immune function), plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone to select optimal integrative anti-hypertensive therapy to reduce BP and decrease CVD.
  • Review diagnostic testing for hypertension: 24 hour ambulatory BP (ABM), endothelial function and arterial compliance testing.
  • Be able to prioritize and personalize the most important nutritional, nutraceutical supplements and life style treatments for hypertension and recognize the most important cardiovascular drug-nutrient interactions
  • Review briefly the optimal drug therapy for hypertension and combination use with nutraceutical supplement

Upon completion of this module, the participant will:

  • Assess the underlying causes of dyslipidemia such as toxins, infections, and nutrition as well as secondary causes
  • Explain how to order and interpret advanced lipid testing
  • Discuss new treatments based on the 45 mechanisms of lipid-induced vascular disease using nutrition, supplements, and drugs in an integrative fashion
  • Measure, treat and clinically apply the top 25 modifiable risk factors and the infinite insults to CVD, CHD, and CHF
  • Measure, treat and apply the finite responses to CVD of inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular immune dysfunction
  • Prioritize which laboratory and non- invasive laboratory and cardiovascular tests should be evaluated in patients in the primary care setting and how to interpret and treat
  • Review integrative medical treatments with nutrition, nutritional supplements. Lifestyle, exercise, weight management, sleep, OSA diagnosis and management, and drugs for cardiovascular disease with protocols and clinical application
  • Clinically measure, review, interpret and treat the coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors
  • Review selected hormone effects on CHD: cortisol, aldosterone, HPA axis, thyroid and melatonin
  • Review the role of glutathione in health and disease
  • Review the role of anxiety, depression, and stress in CHD and MI
  • Review the role of periodontal disease and inflammation in CHD and MI
