I am a traditionally trained ICU physician who witnessed the limitations of conventional disease based medicine during the COVID pandemic. I came across functional medicine in part while searching for alternative approached to help my patients. I was also searching for ways to support the health of my family, so we would not end up as sick as those patients I was seeing in the ICU if or when we got COVID. We have two young children, and there’s nothing like kids to make you realize the importance of defending your own health.
Once I found functional medicine though, there was no going back. It’s just better medicine. So much better to help support someone’s health early, rather than wait until they meet the formal diagnostic criteria I learned in medical school to intervene.
I have since become certified by the Institute of Functional Medicine and completed additional training in advanced lab interpretation. In 2023, I also participated in a clinical trial applying an integrative approach for patients with long COVID. That approach has helped many patients Including some who have been able to return to work. Since that trial wrapped up in 2023, I have continued to learn about new approaches to health and wellness that are working, not just for long COVID, but for fatigue, GI issues, and other chronic illnesses. Now I apply the same attention to detail honed in the ICU to help patients on their journey back to health.
