Description

Module XVI-B: Advanced Cardiovascular Health is the second module of five modules in the Advanced Cardiology Certification. This intensive three-day course will provide 8 hours of daily education covering the most up-to-date, cutting-edge, and practical clinical information for both primary care physicians and specialists in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. This course is designed to provide a structured learning experience so that each attendee can understand the material presented, and apply it in their respective practices. Sessions will include detailed materials, peer-reviewed articles, presentations, diagnostic evaluations, treatment plans, and protocols. Moreover, ample time will be spent on didactic learning through clinical case presentations, interactive training with the professor, and opportunities for Q&A: ensuring that all attendees are competent and well-trained in both basic and advanced Cardiovascular Medicine. With a focus on dyslipidemia and coronary heart disease, topics will cover advanced lipid testing, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, the role of depression and stress in CHD, newly discovered risk factors, neuro-cardiology, the role of nutrition & supplements—in addition to integrative therapies—in the treatment of metabolic cardiology, and more.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the underlying causes and mechanisms of dyslipidemia and dyslipidemia-induced cardiovascular disease
  • Understand and apply advanced lipid testing (lipid particle number and size and HDL functionality and quality) for the diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemia in clinical practice
  • Recognize the underlying causes and secondary etiologies of dyslipidemia
  • Prioritize effective methods to promote vascular repair, reduce vascular damage, and define the interrelationships of the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, and microbiome
  • Examine 45 new mechanisms involved in dyslipidemia-induced cardiovascular disease through a review of integrative therapies
  • Discuss and evaluate clinical trials with statins, and other pharmacologic therapies in the primary and secondary treatment of CHD, MI, and CVD
  • Apply global cardiovascular risk scoring using the new expanded COSEHC method and others
  • Review cardiovascular genomics and SNPs, the top CHD risk factors [hypertension, dyslipidemia, (IR, DM, MS, dysglycemia), obesity and smoking], the details of the correct analysis of each, the top 25 modifiable key CHD risk factors
  • Examine finite causes of CHD: inflammation, oxidative stress, and immune vascular disease
  • Evaluate and understand CHD, MI, CHF, and PAD
  • Discuss metabolic cardiology treatments for CHD, angina, and CHF
  • Assess selected hormone effects on CHD: cortisol, aldosterone, HPA axis, thyroid, and melatonin
  • Identify which laboratory and non-invasive laboratory & cardiovascular tests should be evaluated in patients in the primary care setting
  • Analyze integrative medical treatments with nutrition, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes, exercise, weight management, sleep, OSA diagnosis and management, and drugs for cardiovascular disease
  • Review the role of infectious diseases in CHD
  • Review the role of glutathione in health and disease
  • Review the role of anxiety, depression, and stress in CHD and MI
  • Outline the etiology of periodontal disease and the metrics to measure the biofilm that contributes to the disease process
  • Discuss the mechanisms and the significance of periodontal infections to the vascular disease process
  • Discover the metabolic relationship, energy, and energy deficit  in the growing epidemic of diastolic dysfunction
  • Identify the solution for diastolic dysfunction in terms of ATP support
