Pre Conference Workshop

Nitric Oxide Applications For
Clinical Practice

Course Description

Nitric oxide is considered an anti-aging molecule. This workshop will provide the basic science behind nitric oxide biology and physiology and the most current clinical data for management of many age related diseases related to nitric oxide deficiency. There are two pathways for nitric oxide production in humans. We will review both production pathways and how these can be disrupted in human disease as well as the resulting clinical presentations and symptoms. The most accurate and up to date diagnostics for testing patients for nitric oxide status will be discussed. We will provide evidenced based, safe and effective therapeutic strategies for nitric oxide restoration in humans.

Learning Objectives

  • Define basic nitric oxide biology and physiology
  • Identify clinical presentations to recognize patients deficient in nitric oxide
  • Review the most recent diagnostic tools for nitric oxide testing
  • List lifestyle and therapeutic treatment options for rebalancing nitric oxide levels

Speakers

Dr. Nathan S. Bryan

Dr. Nathan S. Bryan

Dr. Bryan earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport where he was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research. He pursued his post-doctoral training as a Kirschstein Fellow at Boston University School of Medicine in the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute.

After a two year post-doctoral fellowship, in 2006 Dr. Bryan was recruited to join faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston by Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., 1998 Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology. During his tenure as faculty and independent investigator at UT, his research focused on drug discovery through screening natural product libraries for active compounds. His nine years at UT led to several discoveries which have resulted in seven issued US patents and nine pending worldwide. Dr. Bryan has been involved in nitric oxide research for the past 16 years and has made many seminal discoveries in the field. These discoveries and findings have transformed the development of safe and effective functional bioactive natural products in the treatment and prevention of human disease and may provide the basis for new preventive or therapeutic strategies in many chronic diseases. Dr. Bryan has published a number of highly cited papers and authored or edited 5 books. He is an international leader in molecular medicine and natural product chemistry.

Felice L. Gersh, MD

Felice L. Gersh, MD

Felice L. Gersh, M.D. is a rare combination of a Board Certified OB/GYN who is also fellowship trained in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona School of Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree in history from Princeton University and her medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, which was followed by a four year internship and residency in OB/GYN at the prestigious Kaiser Hospital in Los Angeles.

She combines her talents as an Integrative Physician, specializing in all aspects of female health. She is especially renowned for her expertise in hormonal management of women, and has a unique specialization in PCOS, the most common endocrinopathy of women.

In addition to being a sought-after international speaker and published writer, she works full time as the Medical Director of one of the most successful private practices in Orange County, California: The Integrative Medical Group of Irvine. Her long and distinguished career has also included many years serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor of OB/GYN at the Keck/USC School of Medicine, appearing as a frequent guest lecturer to MD/MBA students at the UCI Paul Merage School of Business, and working as a highly respected forensic expert in gynecological matters. She continues a close affiliation with the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona School of Medicine, helping the Fellowship candidates with their comprehensive examinations.

Dr. Gersh has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the being awarded membership in Alpha Omega Alpha-the medical honor society awarded to the top 5 percent of medical students, named the outstanding volunteer faculty for the OB/GYN Department at USC-Keck School of Medicine, identified as a Physician of Excellence for Orange County 13 years in a row and a SuperDoctor of Southern California for the past few years, as well as a TopDoc, among others.

Dr. Gersh has been heard around the world on numerous podcasts and webinars and recently spoke in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, on various issues of menopause and fertility. She recently also spoke in Dubai - presenting a two day conference on comprehensive medical care for women of all ages. Dr. Gersh is currently working on an innovative book on unique aspects and therapies for women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
