Course Description Top

This module provides a functional overview of hormonal changes that manifest in men and women with aging, including the functions and interplay of specific hormones in the body. It discusses how best to identify, test for and treat hormonal deficiencies and dysfunctions, such as with hormone replacement and medication compounding.

Objectives Top

  • Recognize the hormonal changes that women and men manifest with aging
  • Discuss the functions of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA in the body
  • Know the structure of the sex hormones and their metabolism
  • Understand the intricate web of hormones in the body
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, pregnenolone and melatonin

    • Know the symptoms of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA loss
    • Learn the symptoms of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA excess
    • Understand the differences between synthetic and bio-identical hormones
    • Review the literature on synthetic, and bio-identical hormone replacement
    • Understand the adrenal system and its effects on other sex hormones and hormone replacement
    • Initiate or suggest hormone replacement treatment

    • Discuss innovative testing that identifies thyroid dysfunction when TSH is normal
    • Differentiate between progesterone and synthetic progestins relating to structure, pharmacologic actions and risks
    • Explain the literature concerning the risk of breast cancer as it relates to differences in progesterone and synthetic progestins
    • Explain research and clinical studies suggesting that progesterone therapy protects against breast cancer
    • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of testing hormone levels in different body fluids
    • Discuss the methodology of scientific support for, and the differences in, saliva, urine and blood testing of hormones
    • Present scientific and clinical studies that suggest conventional venipuncture serum testing underestimates tissue uptake of sex-steroids delivered topically

Pamela W. Smith, MD, MPH, MS

Pamela Wartian Smith, M.D., MPH, spent her first twenty years of practice as an emergency room physician with the Detroit Medical Center. She is a diplomat of the Board of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Physicians and is an internationally known speaker and author on the subject of Metabolic, Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine. She has been featured on CNN, PBS, and other television channels, has been interviewed in numerous consumer magazines, and has hosted her own radio show. She is currently the Director of the Center for Healthy Living and Longevity and the founder and Director of The Fellowship in Metabolic, Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine. Dr. Smith is also the director of the Master's Program in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at the University of South Florida School of Medicine. She is the author of these best-selling books, "HRT: The Answers," "Vitamins Hype or Hope," "Demystifying Weight Loss," "What You Must Know About Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & More," and "What You Must Know about Women's Hormones." Her newest book, "Why You Can't Lose Weight," was released in May of 2011.

James Wilson, ND, DC, PhD

James L. Wilson, ND, DC, PhD is the Director of Research at Immunogenics Company of America in Tuscon, AZ; President of Future Formulations in Tuscon, AZ; author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21 st Century Stress Syndrome.

Sahar Swidan, PharmD, BCPS

Sahar Z. Swidan, Pharm.D., BCPS obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Michigan and then she completed a three year research fellowship in Bio-Pharmaceutics at the University of Michigan.  She previously was the Director of Pharmacy at Chelsea Community Hospital and the clinical pharmacist for the inpatient head and chronic pain service.  Currently she is President & CEO of Pharmacy Solutions in Ann Arbor, MI which is a unique, personal and educational specialty pharmacy and Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan, College of Pharmacy.  Dr. Swidan is board certified and advanced fellow in anti-aging and regenerative medicine. 

Andrew Heyman, MD

Dr. Heyman has been involved in the field of Anti aging and functional medicine for the past 20 years, first as a certified shiatsu practitioner.  He received formal training in Five element Shiatsu from the Meridian Institute in Pennsylvania.  He has also worked with Jim Gordon, MD at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington DC exploring the intersection between public health, at risk groups, and alternative therapies.  Dr. Heyman eventually went on to receive a Masters in Health Services Administration at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and upon graduation, became the administrator for the University of Michigan Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research Center where he was involved in the development of the Program in Integrative Medicine.  He received his MD from the University of Michigan Medical School, and was the first resident to complete a combined family medicine and Integrative/Functional Medicine residency though the Department of Family Medicine.  Currently he is on faculty at the University of Michigan Department of Family Medicine as an Adjunct Assistant Professor dedicated to teaching young doctors in training about the benefits of anti-aging medicine.  Dr. Heyman has been an invited speaker around the country on various medical topics, notably to the CDC, Martha Stewart Living Magazine, Natural Health Magazine, newspapers and other media.  He currently sits as the national clinical chair for the Consortium of Academic Integrative Health Centers, a 30 member University-based organization dedicated to advancing natural therapies in academic medical centers.  He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his Anti-aging medical practice.

Benoit Tano, MD, PhD

Benoît D. Tano, M.D., Ph.D., is a clinical associate professor of medicine with specialization in Allergy and clinical immunology at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is employed full time as an allergist & immunologist with the Altru Health System in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio and his allergy and clinical immunology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center in Baltimore, Maryland.  Dr. Tano is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.  He is an Integrative Health Care Practitioner and knows that the nose is the way to the whole body.  Dr. Tano was an associate professor of economics at the University of Toledo, Ohio, prior to attending medical school. He is the author of two books, Hormone Imbalance Syndrome: America’s Silent Plague, and The Allergy Detective: Allergic Rhinitis Treatment Secrets Your Doctor May Not Tell You.  Dr. Tano lectures internationally in English and French. 

Filomena Trindade, MD, MPH

Filomena Trindade, M.D., MPH, practices Functional Medicine in Capitola , CA , is a graduate of the Fellowship in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine and teaches at the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM). She is currently very active in developing teaching programs in Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine.
